Sports essential for development: Dy CM

JAMMU: On the basis of collective performance of schools and clubs in the fortnight long multi-sports tournament, KC Public School emerged champions of Sportathon 2016 while runners-up trophy went to JK Public School Kunjwani.
The First Sportathon 2016 was organised by KC Sports Club Jammu in which 2000 youngsters from several schools displayed their skills in different sports such as indoor and outdoor cricket, football, table tennis, swimming, skating, lawn tennis and volleyball.
In the closing ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh was the Chief Guest who gave away trophies and other awards to the winners in various sports.
Speaking on the occasion, Dy CM said the sports is essential for overall development of the human persona and the State Government has initiated several steps for the upgradation of the sports infra besides holding national and international sports events in JK.
Dr Singh said the sports activities are an important part of the extracurricular activities and these imbibe in the sportspersons the spirit of competition as well as camaraderie.
He said the youth should more actively involve themselves in various sports activities rather than being carried away by other influences which can have disastrous effects on both their physique and intellect.
He also put in a word of praise for Arjun Chowdhary, the Managing Director of the Club, for taking the initiative of creating a world-class indoor and outdoor sports complex in Jammu and giving the youth of the State the chance to channelize their energies into a positive direction. He pointed out that this initiative has countered the menace of drugs rampant among the youth of today very effectively.
He said the State has received a special package in the sports sector which would go a long way in catalyzing the sports activities, besides providing the youth the avenues for honing their talent so that they can participate at national and global level and bring laurels to their area, region and state.
Raju Chowdhary, Chairman of KC Educational Society, Ranjeet Kalra Member BCCI, Rajesh Gill of J and K Police , Rajesh Dhar Media Manager of JKCA were also present at the function.
