LEH: Santok Baa Humanitarian Award, carrying Rs. 1 crore, has been conferred upon Ladakh’s renowned innovator, educationist, and environmentist Sonam Wangchuk at Leh on Monday.
The award was presented through the hands of the First lady of Ladakh Neelam Mishra and Raani Sarla Chhewang.
Wangchuk annouced to dedicate this amount for the education of girl children in Leh & Kargil and to make the award function into an occasion to honour womanhood and motherhood.
“Two years ago I was approached by a diamond company in Surat called SRK Exports for an award. I normally do not accept all awards, but upon enquiry we found that this award was instituted by a self-made businessman and philanthropist Govind Dholakia in honour of his mother Santok Baa. The idea of honouring mothers has always been close to my heart and therefore I accepted the award,” Wangchuk said, adding that he has decided to dedicate this amount of Rs 1 crore for the education of girl children in Leh & Kargil and to make the award function into an occasion to honour womanhood and motherhood.
In the past this award had been presented to personalities like HH Dalai Lama & Ratan Tata through the hands of dignitaries like the President of India. Ten members of the Dholakia family from Surat also attended the event as the day happens to be the 21st punya tithi of Ma Santok Baa.
