NEW DELHI: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, introduced India’s two Indian-origin astronauts, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and Group Captain Prasanth B. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla recently became the first Indian to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 mission.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Singh said, “Shubhanshu’s space voyage vindicates the ideals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Vishwa Bandhu Bharat,” adding that the mission reflects three flagship mantras of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-self-reliance, a Whole-of-Nation approach, and global fraternity.
Dr. Singh highlighted that the mission used indigenous technology, aligning with the Gaganyaan programme. The experiments conducted involved institutions like the Department of Biotechnology, IISc Bengaluru, and IITs, with some pointing to the future emergence of “space physicians.” He emphasized that while the benefits of these experiments begin in India, they will extend to humanity at large, reinforcing India’s role as a trusted global partner. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla described his role as mission pilot aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft as transformative, highlighting rigorous training and the physical and emotional challenges of space. He noted that one of the most rewarding outcomes was inspiring children to dream of space, remarking, “The biggest win was that kids are already dreaming-and ISRO is ready to turn those dreams into reality.”
Group Captain Prasanth B. Nair, who trained alongside Shukla, reflected on the respect India receives globally for its space advancements. He praised the nation’s inclusive approach to space exploration, rooted in humility and shared progress.
ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space, Dr. V. Narayanan, presented a roadmap for India’s Human Space Flight Programme, including the Gaganyaan mission, positioning India as a future leader in human space exploration. Dr. Singh concluded by reaffirming that the achievements of these astronauts symbolise a new era for Indian space science, fueled by policies that foster openness, innovation, and public-private collaboration.
