SHO Pantha Chowk caught red-handed while taking Rs 1.5 lakh bribe

SRINAGAR: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday apprehended and arrested Inspector Azim Iqbal, Station House Officer (SHO) of Pantha Chowk, Srinagar for demanding bribe.
According to FIR, the Anti-Corruption Bureau acted on a complaint and set a trap to catch Inspector Azim Iqbal in the act of accepting the bribe.
On receipt of the complaint, an FIR was registered, under section 7 Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 in Police Station ACB central Kashmir and investigation was taken up.
The officials said a team of the ACB caught the SHO of the Pantha Chowk police station red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe. The police officer was allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh for settling a case, and was apprehended by the ACB, the officials added.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths have allegedly recovered cash amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh and a cheque of Rs 50,000 from the possession of the arrested police officer in presence of independent witnesses, the officials said.
Further investigations are underway to uncover more details about the case and any possible accomplices.
The arrest of such a high-ranking officer sends a strong message about the seriousness of the Anti-Corruption Bureau’s commitment to fighting corruption, the officer said.
