Srinagar: A day after ending his 20-year association with ruling National Conference ahead of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, MLC Sheikh Ghulam Rasool on Thursday joined opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with his son Sheikh Gowhar.
They were welcomed into the party fold by the Party Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, a PDP spokesman said.
Speaking on the occasion, Sayeed said the doors of the PDP are open for all well-meaning people, who want to contribute in the party’s  efforts to bring about lasting peace, and development in the region.
He said it is encouraging that the people in large numbers are joining the PDP and reposing their faith in the democratic process to find solution to their problems.
The PDP patron said the party represents hope and optimism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Rasool said PDP, by way of its pro-people policies, is the only viable regional alternative for the people of the State.
He alleged that the present government has failed to do anything good for the people of Kashmir. Rasool, a former Chief Secretary of the State who joined National Conference after retiring from government service, said the PDP is the only party having a clear agenda for the betterment of the youth of the State.
Rasool, who was seen as key to Omar’s victory in 2008 Assembly elections from Ganderbal, had announced his resignation from the NC yesterday citing lack of consultation in the party over State affairs and even in orgnisational matters of Ganderbal. (PTI)
