Sham reviews Jhelum flood protection works

JAMMU: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Sham Lal Choudhary on Monday chaired a meeting to discuss the finalization of DPR for Phase-II of ‘comprehensive flood management plan works on river Jhelum and its tributaries’.
Secretary, PHE, I&FC Department M Raju, Chief Engineer, I&FC Jammu K K Mangotra, Chief Engineer, I&FC Kashmir M.M Shahnawaz, Chief Engineer, IBO CWC Chandigarh Atul Jain, Director, M&A CWC Jammu Kamlesh Jain and other senior officers of the department were present in the meeting.
During the meeting, in depth discussions were held on all components of the flood management plan so as to mitigate the dangers that may arise due to rise in the level of water in Jhelum.
The comprehensive flood management plan works on river Jhelum and its tributaries is being executed under the Prime Minister’s Development Plan which includes works pertaining to flood protection, anti-erosion, widening of river, raising of embankments, re-sectioning, desilting and dredging of the river. It includes various immediate, short term and long-term measures to reduce the risk of floods in the river.
Regarding the progress on formulation of DPR, the Minister was informed that mathematical model study of the river was done by CWPRS, Pune. A team of CWC officers also conducted site visits of the river and recommended that the flood discharge carrying capacity of the river Jhelum should be improved to 60,000 cusecs from Sangam to Padshahibagh, it was informed.
