JAMMU: Scripting history Kayaking & Canoeing queen Bilquis Mir, a water sports promoter from Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as the first woman from India to serve as a jury member for the forthcoming Summer Olympics in Paris.
The journey that had started in Srinagar’s Dal Lake in the year 1998, has now reached the world; Bilquis Mir has become the only Indian to achieve this landmark.
As per the reliable sources, her appointment was confirmed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in a letter to the Jammu and Kashmir administration.
Expressing her excitement and calling the Olympics the pinnacle of sports, Bilwuis said her appointment was a proud moment not just for herself but for all girls and women aspiring to excel in sports.
Bilquis has represented India in canoeing and coached the national women’s team more than once.
Despite challenges, while pursuing her passion, Bilquis has kept the UT’s and the nation’s flag high at the international scene.
Bilquis has the distinction of producing International stuff from Jammu and Kashmir, besides having the honour of being the only Indian woman and the first from Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory to be appointed as the jury member at the 19th Asian Games held at Hangzhou in China earlier.
In recognition to her outstanding contribution in the field of sports, Bilquis has the distinction of being the Sher-e-Kashmir and the State Awardee.
She has also been the recipient of the Devi Award.
