JAMMU: The City of Temples is in danger of turning into a dump yard with the JMC sanitary staff and other employees going on strike.
The situation now is such that even a walk down along the otherwise beautiful roads is becoming a nightmare due to the piles of garbage and accompanying stench.
The condition of main bazaars, bus stand, nearby government hospitals and other areas of Jammu city and outskirts is obnoxious.
The waste near isolated places and in drains attracted stray dogs. Moreover, drains and canals are also clogged in the absence of sanitary staff.
“It’s just the second day of the strike of the JMC sanitary staff and the garbage bins are already overflowing and we don’t have any alternative to dump the household waste,” a homemaker of the city said.
A casual walk down a few roads is proving to be a challenge as piles of filth are emanating bad odour.
A large number of sanitation employees and workers from JMC departments have been on strike which entered the second consecutive day today.
A larger number of workers including women Safai Karamcharis assembled in the JMC premises and raised slogans in favour of their demands.
The protesters carrying placards raised slogans against the State Government and JMC for not addressing their demands pending for last several months.
The union is demanding re-organisation of JMC, scrapping of NGO system in JMC, deployment of municipal employees in wards instead of parking slots, regularisation of contractual drivers of JMC who have completed nine years service, holding of DPC for all cadres etc.
CSKU President Rinku Gill said that at numerous times they had given representation and submitted charter of demands to the concerned authorities but no positive action has been taken by the municipal administration which compelled them to adopt agitation path.
