JAMMU: Young students are like soil and it is responsibility of the elders to shape them in a productive manner so that they can lead a life with dignity and honour.
This was stated by SP South, Sandeep Choudhary while addressing students from various streams of studies during a seminar held here on Wednesday.
SP South, Sandeep Choudhary said “Unemployment is the single biggest reason behind drug abuse and violence in society. If young people can have dignified careers, they will automatically stay away from drug abuse and violence. The cultivation of positive young minds is the responsibility of elders of the society and if this job is done with responsibility, a very civilised and patriotic society can be created automatically.”
SP South dwelt upon various career and educational opportunities available to the graduate and post graduate pass-outs. He emphasised on the importance of exposure for the students.
“Most of the competitive exams for jobs and admission to institutes of higher education are conducted on merit-based system. The students coming from rural background face difficulty in these exams due to the lack of exposure. They have to compete with students from good schools and colleges. The only way to get through tough exams for students from humble backgrounds is to prepare themselves with hard work and dedication,” he stated.
While suggesting the tools for getting adequate exposure, the SP emphasised on the importance of internet and easy availability of knowledge through Youtube lectures and different open source websites.
Exposure can come through different means like travel, books, magazines, movies and seminars. Students from Jammu can use their smartphones and internet to travel through virtual means in case they cannot afford to actually travel to different places. SP told the students to watch travel documentaries produced by Rick Steves, which are available on Youtube.
“The importance of understanding and appreciating the relation between travel and geographical knowledge was emphasised upon. Travelling and knowing about new places opens human mind to greater things,” he asserted.
SP South emphasized that debate and discussion on various issues of the day is beauty of Indian democracy. Students should not shy away from debate and discussion but that should be done in a very civilized manner, he added.
“The importance of English as a global language and its vitality in cultivating a career was also discussed. The admission procedure for institutes like JNU, IIMs and Indian Statistical Institute was also discussed. Scholarships like Inlaks, Commonwealth, Fulbright, Chevening and Daad are available for Indian students to carry on their education in foreign universities. More details about these scholarships can be obtained from website of Ministry of Human Resources and Development,” Sandeep Chaudhary asserted.
