Religious institutions better inculcate values of health: Dr Sushil

JAMMU: Asserting a positive correlation between how religious and spiritual beliefs influence heart health , HoD Cardiology GMC&H and SSH, Dr. Sushil Sharma on Sunday conducted a day-long camp at Gurdwara Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji in Domana area of the Jammu City in the wee hours of the morning.
Keeping in view the sanctity attached to the place, Dr. Sushil proposed that there are number of important pathways through which religion has the capacity to control Cardiovascular Diseases and thereby help in promoting overall well being of an individual. He emphasised that that by prescribing a certain diet or discouraging the abuse of alcoholic beverages, smoking, etc., religion can protect and promote a healthy lifestyle. Further, religious people can experience a better mental health, more positive psychological states, more optimism and faith, which in turn can lead to a better physical state due to less stress. Moreover, Spiritual and religious beliefs increases inner peace and provides strength to cope up with the diseases, a phenomenon commonly known as Spiritual coping. Meditation, yoga, relaxation exercises, prayer, etc. have positive effect on the overall human environs and particular cardiovascular diseases, he added.
Religious institutions provide social support mechanisms and practices that encourage healthy behaviours, as well as a personal sense of meaning. Individuals, particularly elders and those with chronic medical conditions, often turn to religious coping methods, such as seeking spiritual support from pundits, Ulemas, Granthis, church members, when faced with mental and physical health difficulties.
Dr. Sushil emphasised the pivotal role that the religious institutions can play to aware the common populace about the various health concerns and their remedy provided in their respective religious literature. Only conjoint and collaborative effort in this aspect can avert the affliction created by Cardiovascular Diseases, which is the leading cause of death killing 17.5 million people globally.
More than 500 patients were examined and treated as a part of this cardiovascular awareness campaign. Free medicines were also given as per the advice.
Management Committee of the Gurdwara Sahib, Sant Tejwant Singh, Rajinder Singh Bali, Tejinder Singh Wazir and Jaspal Singh expressed their thanks to Dr. Sushil and his team for willing to conduct cardiac awareness camp on this pious day even on a short notice.
This worthwhile human endeavour is accompanied by Dr. Dhaneshwar Kapoor, Dr. Anitipal Singh and Dr Chakshu Mahajan.
