Rainwater harvesting

0 95

Dear Editor,
This refers to your article “Effective management of water” (State times – June 3). Here I would like to point out that according to NASA, “Collecting rainwater for vegetable irrigation could reduce water bills, increase caloric intake and even provide a second source of income for people in India.” The estimated each person would require an average of about 35 gallons of water per day. For an average household of five people, demand would be about 178 gallons daily. Rain water harvesting along with recycling of waste water is a must in every housing complex. We can raise enough dams in the mountains ignoring the environmentalists and turn the water flow to interior region instead of wasting it to drain in the sea. India has severe problems getting potable water to all of its residents. Rainwater harvesting is urgently needed to mitigate fresh water crisis in our country. In urban area it should be encouraged in every house by suitable tax concession. Let’s catch every drop at conserving and harvesting water as now it is the right time to talk about saving every drop while we can.
