JAMMU: After boycotting their Minor examination, a large number of outstation students of National Institute of Technology, (NIT) Srinagar on Monday vacated their hostel rooms to return home without any security cover.
According to official sources, an estimated 1000 outstation students on Monday went to their homes after boycotting the minor examination.
The students who were keen on returning home were directed to give an undertaking by the college authorities to submit a formal request declaring they were ready to go home on their own.
Earlier the MHRD officials and the state government had made a public statement that the government was ready to provide fool-proof security to the students keen on returning home.
The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) had already conveyed to the non-local students that if they do not appear for the exams, they would be permitted to sit for them on a later date.
The students blamed the tension at the NIT for not taking the exams.
However, all the local students sat for the exams.

During the meeting which was presided over by M J Zarabi, Chairman of the Board of Governors of NIT Srinagar, it was decided that attempts be made to restore normalcy at the earliest and academic activity be brought back on track. The sources said the eight members of Governing Board, also comprising officials from the HRD ministry and the State Government, were apprised of the current situation and incidents that had taken place last week after India lost the T-20 world cup semi-final cricket match to West Indies.
They were told that examinations were being held from today and that some of the outstation students who could not write their papers would be appearing at a later date
Meanwhile, the main gate of NIT on Monday witnessed drama after Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena president Tejinder Pal Singh Bagga attempted to hoist a flag on the front gate of the institute.
“Bagga and his two associates were detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police while they were trying to enter the National Institute of Technology here,” a senior police officer said.
