With OGWs’ role surfacing in terror attacks, ‘compensation’ for Wani haunts PDP-BJP

JAMMU: Almost one month has passed when a heavily armed fidayeen group had effortlessly breached the multi tier security grid and targeted an Army camp located on the periphery of Nagrota based 16 corps headquarters but the key investigators belonging to different investigating agencies are still searching for authentic clues to piece together the sequence of events preceding the strike on November 29. Seven army personnel, including two officers, were martyred in the cowardice attack.
After initial investigations were carried out by the local police, CID Wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police, and army, the government formally handed over the investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to unravel the origin of the terror plot.
Till date the investigating agencies are searching for the vehicle used for ferrying fidayeen, dressed in police uniform, to the Nagrota based army camp. The possible route taken by the fidayeen to come close to the army’s artillery unit is yet to be identified. Though several versions have emerged yet the investigators are still working on different theories along with corroborative evidence to nail the mastermind behind the attack.
Interestingly, the army authorities which were carrying out parallel investigations, have submitted their internal report to the Army Headquarters pointing loop holes in the periphery security and poor vigil along the border routes linking the National Highway. It has been observed by the military investigators that in all the three big terror strikes in Pathankot, Uri and Nagrota, the role of OGWs was crucial in ensuring maximum damage was caused to the Indian forces during the strike.
The army has also talked about the presence of well knit network of Over Ground Workers, who had played key role in transporting the fidayeen group to the army camp in Nagrota. The NIA officers are on the job and scanning the call details and other relevant material to nail the OGW network.
Ironically, at a time the investigators were raising fingers on the OGWs’ role in terror related incidents, the PDP-BJP Government in Jammu and Kashmir, in a bid to placate separatists and anti-national elements, has notified compensation for Khalid Wani, the elder brother of Hizab terrorist Burhan Wani, who himself was an OGW of this terror outfit and got eliminated in an encounter with the army.
Meanwhile, certain recommendations to beef-up periphery security and close watch on the local network of OGWs have been made by the military officers to ensure the militant handlers sitting across the border were not able to exploit the same network of OGWs to launch fresh attacks on the Indian soil across Jammu region.
