JAMMU: CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), Jammu based on the innovation of Dr K.C Sharma, a renowned Rural Surgeon and his wife Dr Uma Sharma has developed a novel anti tapeworm drug.
This drug has been initially designed by this medico couple from Udhampur, after taking cue from ancient texts of Ayurveda and conducted multiple trials for almost two decades with 100 per cent success rate mostly by administering single dose.
Now CSIR-IIIM has developed this drug after scientific validation starting with authentication of raw material its chemical fingerprinting, and following all quality control and quality assurance parameters at IIIM-CSIR Unit for Manufacturing Herbal Drugs. The drug is standardised using Embelin as chemical marker.
Dr. Ram Vishwakarma, Director, told reporters, “For this we have recently received approval from Drug and Food Control Organisation, J and K for preparation of trial batches in cGMP Unit for Manufacturing and Marketing of Herbal Drugs.”
It is pertinent to mention here that this cGMP Unit has been first of its kind in public sector setup at the cost of Rs 20 crore with financial support from CSIR, DST and AYUSH.
This herbal drug is used against Taeniasi” an intestinal infection caused by two species of tapeworm namely Taenia Solium (pork tapeworm), Taenia Saginata (beef tapeworm) Diphyllobothrium Latum from fish.
Eating undercooked meat from infected animals is the main cause of tapeworm infection in people. When a person is infected with pork tapeworm, its larvae develop in the muscles, skin, eyes and the central nervous system. When cysts develop in the brain, the condition is referred to as neurocysticercosis which causes severe headaches, blindness, convulsions, and epileptic seizures, and can be fatal, he said.
Tapewormin is administered to patients infested with all types of tapeworms and its unique feature is that it is safe being natural and also removes the head of tapeworm, thus ruling out the possibility of reoccurrence. This drug has been named as Tapewormin and will be soon available in the market.
