NC MLA detained at Srinagar airport after bullets found in luggage; investigation underway

SRINAGAR: An MLA of the ruling National Conference was detained on Sunday at the Srinagar International Airport after two live rounds were detected in his baggage.
Bashir Ahmad Veeri, the MLA from Srigufwara-Bijbehara Assembly seat, was stopped for questioning at the airport when the X-ray scan led to the recovery of two live rounds from his baggage. Veeri was travelling to Jammu on an IndiGo flight.
Security forces immediately took Veeri to Humhama police station for questioning to determine how the bullets ended up in his possession.
Officials stated that the investigation is ongoing and further details will be provided as it become available. Sources indicated that Veeri has a licensed pistol, and the bullets may have been accidentally left in his bag. However the matter is under investigations.
57-year-old National Conference MLA is a medical doctor and social worker by profession. He recently secured win in the Bijbehara assembly elections, defeating BJP’s Sufi Yusif and PDP’s Iltija Mufti, the daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, by a huge margin.
According to the Election Commission, Veeri’s assets total Rs 2.6 crore, including Rs 74.5 lakh in movable assets and Rs 1.9 crore in immovable assets, with a declared income of Rs 29.4 lakh. His affidavit shows no criminal cases registered against him.
