JAMMU: The first Sunday of the year 2017 witnessed engrossing performance by young artists of Natrang in a new play in Hindustani ‘Budhi Kaki’ written by Munshi Premchand and directed by Neeraj Kant.
Director of Natrang, Balwant Thakur announced that Natrang promises to showcase best of the world plays in Jammu and will also strengthen the moment of consistency of the performances.
On the occasion, he informed that Natrang completed 120 shows in one year which is a record in the country.
The story of today’s play revolves around an old woman, popularly known as Kaki, who just have one desire left and that is of good food. She is always engaged in only one kind of work, and that is crabbing for even a little thing. And her crabbing is too loud to even wake up a sleeping giant. Her attitude towards family members and vice-versa adds humour and makes the play humorous in many ways. But in the end, play takes a twist, which forces the family members to sympathise with Kaki. This play also gives a strong social message that would make everyone think about their loving parents. Munshi Premchand had the amazing hold over the social fabric of the society and his portrayal of the fate of elderly people has been so close to realities that, this story of Kaki provokes spectators to have a peep into his/her behaviour towards elderly people. Through Kaki he advocated the cause of elderly people who sacrifice their entire life for the upbringing of their children and when they look upto them to reciprocate then they are left to lead lonely with no emotional and social security.
Dewankshi Sabikhi in her portrayal of Kaki gave an engrossing performance and was successful in evoking lot of emotional response. Vrinda Sharma also received appreciation of the audience as daughter-in law. Prominent among others who gave good performances included Mohit Kaul, Rajat Salgotra, Akshit Kaul, Vedhant Malhotra, Aman Kapoor and Koushal Manhas. Lights were operated by Neeraj Kant whereas the music was rendered by Gautam Kumar. The Sets were designed by Shivam Singh and the presentations were done by Goutam Sharma.
