JAMMU: Chheenk, a play in Hindi was featured here in Natrang’s Sunday Theatre Series this week. The play, written by Dr. Ram Kumar Verma and directed by Neeraj Kant, carried a message which was coated with wholesome layer of humour.
Speaking on the occasion, Director Natrang, Balwant Thakur informed that Natrang is opening William Shakespeare’s famous play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in Hindi directed by Aarushi Thakur for Jammu audience on 5th , 6th and 7th September, 2016 daily at 6:00 PM at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu.
The play Chheenk very aptly caricatured those people whose wisdom in entrapped in superstitions. The story revolves around a middle-aged person who is so much taken in by myths and superstitions that he even dreams of the same while sleeping. In order to prosper, he tries to avoid all the bad omens and also deliberately creates the situations which are considered auspicious. One of the biggest deterrents of him is sneezing, Chheenk, i.e. if someone sneezes, he considers it a sign of bad luck and curses the person who sneezes. One fine day, he wakes up very happy as he had a dream that God is granting him good luck and prosperity but suddenly his servant sneezes, he gets red with anger and wants to punish the servant for his misdeed but his wife intervenes and tries to make him think logically. It happens one more time that he wanted to create a superficial auspicious situation so that good luck is showered on him but suddenly his servant sneezes, while running after him to punish him, he hears the sound of another sneeze by another person, it adds on to his anger but the worse sound was the sound of sneeze by his wife, he gets infuriated but at the end, all his anger gets blown away when he himself sneezes.
Natrang actors who acted in the play included Meenakshi Bhagat, Shivam Singh, Kuldeep Angral and Rishav Sharma. The music was operated by Brijesh Avtaar Sharma and the lights were designed by Mahikshit Singh. The show was coordinated by Mohd. Yaseen and Juhi Singh did the presentations.
