National Sports Day: J&K Sports Council honours sports promoters, journalists

JAMMU: To mark National Sports Day celebrations, the Jammu wing of Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council on Monday evening honoured the sports promoters including the veterans and journalists for their contributions in the field and boosting the sportspersons time to time here at a function organized at K K Hakku Astro-Turf Stadium.Additional Director General of Police, Jammu Zone, Mukesh Singh along with Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar were the special guests.In his welcome address, sports promoter and member, Sports Council, Ranjeet Kalra highlighted the role of Jammu and Kashmir administration headed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who is also the president of J&K Sports Council.He said, “it is because of LG Manoj Sinha’s efforts and vision, the sports sector in the recent years is witnessing a major reformation, which resulted in swelling of medal tally in various disciplines at national and international levels for Jammu and Kashmir.”Moreover, he said that the visionary Secretary, J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul is converting dreams of many sportspersons into realities, adding, “J&K sports are seeing an era of progress across the Union Territory with major initiatives being undertaken for sports welfare.”ADGP Mukesh Singh while congratulating the gathering, remembered the hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary and lauded the J&K Sports Council for initiating this event to acknowledge those contributing into the sports field.Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar also extended greetings to the organizing body stating that it is an encouragement to those who are sweating hard to promote sports and working for its welfare and upliftment.
However, those honoured in sports promoters category are Anil Gupta, Manzoor Ahmad Bhatt, Vijay Saraf, Sushant Gupta, Payal Jain, Rajesh Gill, Veer Pratap Singh, Dharamveer Singh, Gaurav Mahajan, Mohd Tariq, Sanjeev Sharma.In veterans category, Romesh Mahajan (Cricket), H S Gill (Volleyball), Amarjeet Singh (Basketball), Veena Chib (Hockey), Veena Sharma (Cricket), Ram Khajuria (Mountaineering), Madan Khajuria (Skating), Usha Chunni (Physical Educationist).Meanwhile in journalists category, Manu Srivatsa (veteran journalist), Shiv Chander Sharma, Sudhir Kumar, Sanjeev Sharma, Vishal Bharti, Amit Verma, Vikas Abrol, Goldie Sharma, Rajesh Dhar, Vivek Suri and Naveen Kaul.Divisional Sports Officer, Jammu, Ashok Singh, member Sports Council, Rajeev Sharma, managers Satish Gupta and S P Singh among others from J&K Sports Council, players and sports enthusiasts graced the occasion.An exhibition girl’s hockey match was also played to mark the celebrations and a tribute to the hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
