JAMMU: The Department of Mathematics, University of Jammu, today inaugurated the three-day National Seminar on ‘Recent Trends in Analysis and Allied Areas” and the 31st Annual Conference of Jammu Mathematical Society (JMS). Padma Shri Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice Chairman, Higher Education Council J&K UT and Chief Guest of the seminar inaugurated the national seminar and shared his insight with the delegates coming from all across the country.
In his address, Prof Dinesh Singh emphasized the importance of making mathematics relevant to real-world applications and societal benefits.
He urged teachers to help students recognize the value of the subject in addressing societal challenges and to bridge the gap between mathematical theory and its practical uses. Highlighting the evolving technological landscape, Prof. Singh encouraged educators to adapt their teaching methods to make mathematics more accessible and understandable for students.
Prof Singh also highlighted the responsibility of educators in empowering students by strengthening their foundational knowledge.
He called on teachers to ensure that students become more capable, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to navigate a rapidly changing world.
By connecting students with the core principles of mathematics, he said, teachers can help them harness the power of the subject to thrive in a technology-driven future.
Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu presided over the Inaugural Function.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Rai lauded the Department for successfully organizing the event, acknowledging their efforts in promoting critical discussions on the intersection of disciplines.
He emphasized the pivotal role of mathematics in advancing various branches of science, particularly in biological sciences.
Prof. Rai explained that mathematics serves as the foundation for modeling complex biological systems. Mathematical principles can be applied to simulate biological processes, predict outcomes, and develop strategies for tackling real-world challenges.
Furthermore, Prof. Rai stressed the need for dissolving traditional academic boundaries to encourage a more integrated approach to education. He argued that by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, students and researchers could harness the full potential of mathematics to make significant advancements in biological sciences and beyond. This holistic approach, he added, is essential for evolving education in a rapidly changing world where the integration of knowledge across fields is becoming increasingly crucial.
Prof. A. P. Singh, former Head Department of Mathematics and Dean Faculty of Sciences appreciated the efforts of the Department of Mathematics to sustain the Jammu Mathematical Society for the past 34 years, ensuring its growth. He congratulated the organizing team of the National Seminar and 31st Annual Conference of the Jammu Mathematical Society. Earlier, Prof. Romesh Kumar, HOD, Department of Mathematics, and President Jammu Mathematical Society and Convener of the National Seminar formally welcomed the delegates.
