THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Games Village at Menamkulam here is set for a revamp, with the state government planning to dismantle the eco-friendly building units for more meaningful structures after the 35th National Games this month.
The government has drawn up a plan to dismantle the constructions at the village built on the concept of ‘pre-fabricated housing technology’, after the fortnight-long event and distribute materials to panchayats and other state-run facilities to help their infrastructure needs, officials said.
Under the technology, constructions can be dismantled and relocated to other places and reused.
The Oommen Chandy government recently issued an order directing authorities concerned to furnish the details of their infrastructure requirements to get a share of the building units of the Games Village.
The MLAs have also been asked to submit proposals for their constituencies, officials said. The Rs 60-crore Games Village, located about 20 km from the capital city will accommodate over 5000 delegates including athletes and coaches from different states during the games starting on January 31.
A total of 365 pre-fab houses will be set up there and five athletes together will share a room. Team officials and coaches will be allocated single or double rooms, they said.
“The pre-fabricated technology has been selected as it goes well with the concept of Green Games, our motto. Pre-fab units are easy to assemble and dismantle. Its durability is up to 30 years without any maintenance,” a National Games Secretariat official told PTI.
Quoting the recent government order, the official said those panchayats or government departments which submit details of their proposed construction, including the estimate of the foundation and the exact location would be considered.
He said that sports-related projects would get preference, adding hospitals as well as forest and wildlife-related constructions would also get prominence. Besides housing units, the Games Village has facilities like kitchen, food courts, reception desks, medical centre, recreational zone, health club, open air theatre and conference halls.
House-keeping, solid waste management, security, clean water distribution facilities and landscaping are other highlights of the Village. Organisers said the Games Village would be a ‘miniature India’ as this venue is supposed to be the most vocal and visual representation of country’s national integration at the Games.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the event on January 31 while President Pranab Mukherjee will be the chief guest at the concluding ceremony on February 14.
