Multi-disaster utility shelters to be constructed in vulnerable areas

POONCH: To discuss the parameters for construction of safe multi-purpose/multi-disaster utility shelters with allied facilities at vulnerable places in the district, District Development Commissioner, Poonch, M.H Malik chaired a meeting of concerned officers on Tuesday.
Areas highly vulnerable to disasters like earthquakes, floods, landslides, border shelling, avalanches etc. were discussed in the meeting. Utility shelters with capacity of more than 1,500 persons at a centrally located place near vulnerable villages will be constructed. Utility shelters in the vicinity of villages close to LoC and vulnerable to border shelling will also be constructed for effective rehabilitation of people affected by border shelling.
Keeping in view the vulnerability and requirements of multi-purpose/multi-utility shelters, teams consisting of engineers from PWD, PDD and PHE besides other supporting staff from revenue and other concerned departments will conduct survey to identify the locations and estimate the financial involvement for construction of utility shelters. The DDC asked the engineers to take into account the size, design, soil condition and other disaster mitigation parameters while selecting the location. Multi-purpose/multi-disaster utility shelters will be constructed with the assistance of the World Bank.
Senior Superintendent of Police, J S Johar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mumtaz Ali Chowdhary, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Shafiq Ahmed Choudhary besides other officers attended the meeting.
