POONCH: To review the working of Labour and Social Welfare Departments in the district, Deputy Chairman Legislative Council, Jahangir Hussain Mir convened a meeting of concerned officers here on Tuesday.
Stressing for decent working conditions and improved quality of life for labourers, Mir asked the Assistant Labour Commissioner (ALC) to ensure that various social security and welfare measures meant for labour class reach them and instructed her to look into the issue of regulation of conditions of work, safety of labourers besides strengthening enforcement of labour laws.
He urged her to be more mobile in the field and aware the labour class about the government schemes meant for them and also asked her to adopt proactive approach to ensure conciliation between employees and employers in case of disputes.
Earlier, the Assistant Labour Commissioner briefed the Deputy Chairman about the activities of the department and apprised him about the implementation of various welfare schemes for labourers in the district.
While reviewing the functioning of Social Welfare Department, the Deputy Chairman called upon the officers to ensure that the benefits of various social welfare programmes percolate down to the targeted section. Asking the officers to work with missionary zeal to help the destitute, orphans and poorest of the poor, Mir stressed for proactive approach in implementing the welfare schemes to ameliorate the sufferings of underprivileged sections of society. He also urged the officers to organise awareness camps about welfare schemes so that people avail their benefits effectively. The Deputy Chairman stressed for complete transparency and accountability in the working of Social Welfare Department to ensure empowerment of downtrodden sections of society.
Additional District Development Commissioner, Arvind Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police, Amit Gupta, Assistant Labour Commissioner, Rabia Iqbal besides officers of Social Welfare Department attended the meeting.
