SRINAGAR: An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Awantipora area of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir this evening, police said.
Security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in Ladoo area of Awantipora, 30 kms from here, following information about the presence of militants there, a police official said. As the security forces were closing in on the militants, the ultras opened fire which was returned by the troops, the official said.
When a cordon was being laid around the area where militants were reportedly hiding, the security forces were fired upon. The forces retaliated and a gunfight started in the area.
In the exchange of fire, one militant was killed, the official said, adding his identity and group affiliation was yet to be ascertained.
The Sunday incident comes four days after a lone terrorist travelling in a bus from Srinagar opened fire on a joint police and CRPF naka killing a woman co-passenger and injuring two others at Kud.
