JAMMU: Students of Model Institute of Engineering and Technology developed a drone based system capable of detecting live humans buried under debris or otherwise remotely.
Rishabh Magotra, final year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering, along with his team members Avinash Kumar Mehra and Manu Kanathia, developed a prototype ground controlled robotic drone that can maneuvre through the affected area to detect the people who get buried under the debris whilst such disasters by sensing the spectrum of infrared frequency range emitted by live humans corresponding to the average live human body temperature.
Image processing solutions have been already in existence for such purposes, whereby optical cameras on-board the drone capture and process images for the detection purpose, he said adding that such solutions, however, fail when detection is required to be made over several layers of rubble as in case of earthquakes. The limiting factor to the proposed system is the thickness of the debris over which the detection is required.
The current prototype model detects up to six inches of non-uniform debris. Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Simrandeep Singh felicitated and motivated the students for their creditable work and recommended to present the initiative to NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) and other organisations dealing with the disaster relief activities. The whole project was designed and developed by the students in the workshop and laboratories at MIET. The Research work has been sent to the leading research journals for publication, to raise the cause and lead further development. Prof. Ankur Gupta, Director MIET and Prof. S.K Sharma, Director Academics MIET along with Asst. Prof. Jamini Sharma, HOD Electronics and Communication Department MIET congratulated the students for their excellent achievement.
