MAHANPUR: The Annual Chhinj Mela, a celebrated event in the hilly region of Kathua, took place with immense fanfare and enthusiasm today in Mahanpur.
Inaugurated by Col. Mahan Singh (Retd), DDC Chairman Kathua, the event drew over 5,000 spectators, organizers, and more than 300 wrestlers from various states in Northern India. The occasion was further animated by a team of Dholis (drum beaters) from Himachal Pradesh, with several prominent personalities in attendance, including DySP Suresh Kumar SDPO Basohli, Sonu Gupta, Sandeep Chib SHO Basohli, Shanti Bhushan, Rajinder Jaswal, Raj Singh, Ram Chand (ex-BDO), and Atul Gupta (Joint Secretary), among others.
The highlight of the day was the final bout between top wrestlers Hind Kesari Mohinder Gaikwad of Pune (Maharashtra) and Jammu Kashmir Kesri Amin Beniya of Jammu. In a remarkable display of wrestling skill, unparalleled strength, and stamina, Mohinder Gaikwad triumphed over Amin Beniya.
Speaking on the occasion, Col. Mahan Singh commended the arrangements and smooth conduct of the event by the local Chhinj Management Committee, headed by Sonu Gupta. He underscored the importance of local youth participating in such events and other sports to maintain physical and mental fitness.
“The game of wrestling requires mental strength, along with endurance and the ability to bounce back against your opponent,” Col. Mahan said and emphasized the need for young people to develop these qualities through active participation in sports.
Col. Mahan also highlighted that Chhinj Melas are a reflection of our rich culture and heritage, fostering a sense of community and tradition. He urged the youth to take pride in these events and to engage more actively, as they not only build physical strength but also promote mental resilience and a sense of belonging within the community.
