Maj Gen Guha lauds winners of North-Zone Sainik Schools Sports Meet

NAGROTA: Sainik School Nagrota lifted the North Zone Basketball Championship by defeating Sainik School Kapurthala in a closely contested match on the final day of the week-long North Zone Inter Sainik Schools Sports Meet-2015 hosted by Sainik School Nagrota, here on Saturday.
Favourites Sainik School Kunjpura survived pressure and clinched the Volleyball Trophy, closely followed by Sainik School Nagrota who won three out of their four league matches and finished runners-up.
In Hockey, the trophy was bagged by Sainik School Sujanpur Tira while both Junior and Sub-junior titles in Football went to Sainik School Ghorakhal.
Maj Gen BK Guha, Chief of Staff, HQ 16 Corps and Chairman, Local Board of Administration of the school graced the Presentation Ceremony as the Chief Guest and gave away the medals to winners of games and literary competitions.
The function was organised at the School Auditorium after the culmination of the final round of league matches in the morning. Col Kapil Dev Koushal, Principal presented welcome address and gave a brief description of the Inter Sainik Schools Sports Meet-2015 and its significance in grooming the personality of the cadets. The Chief Guest awarded medals to the winners and runners-up of Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Football Juniors, Football Sub-juniors and also trophies to the winners of literary competitions.
In his inspirational address to the cadets of five North Zone Sainik Schools, the General mentioned that Sainik Schools are the perfect grooming grounds of cadets for an elite career as officers in the Armed Forces. The General also expressed confidence that the cadets who proved their mettle in sports in this North Zone Sports Meet will devote their time to studies equally and clear the UPSC-NDA Written Examination in large numbers and bring laurels to their respective Sainik Schools.
The Chief Guest also shared reminiscences of his school days wherein he had been an ardent player of hockey.
On the literary front, Sainik School Nagrota won the Inter Sainik Schools Hindi Debate Championship. Cadet Molu Prasad of the host school stood first in this competition. Sainik School Kapurthala bagged the English Debate trophy and Cadet Dhananjay Jasrotia of Sainik School Nagrota bagged the first prize while Sainik School Kunjpura emerged winners in the North Zone Quiz Competition by a narrow margin. In the colourful cultural extravaganza organised in the evening of the penultimate day, all the participating contingents presented cultural items at the School Auditorium highlighting their regional cultural heritage. Sainik School Sujanpur Tira were crowned Champions of the North Zone Sainik Schools Cultural Championship for their scintillating performance on stage. Sainik School Nagrota, being the hosts did not figure in this competition although their show won a resounding applause from the audience. The North Zone Champions of each of these games will proceed to participate in the All India Sainik Schools Inter Zonal Championship-2015 to be held at different venues across the country later this year.
