NEW DELHI: Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi called on Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and MoS PMO, Dr Jitendra Singh and discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to the island union territory as well as implementation of various central schemes in the region.
In a meeting lasting over half-an-hour, Jagdish Mukhi provided a detailed resume of new initiatives undertaken by him ever since he took over the current assignment a few months ago.
These included regulation of the sale of intoxicant products and holding of public awareness programmes.
Mukhi told the Minister about the vast unexplored potential of Andaman and Nicobar Islands which had remained under – utilized over the years.
He offered a number of suggestions to promote tourism and business exchanges with the island territory. He also mentioned the secular-social culture of the island which made it easier for the people to mingle with communities from other parts of the country.
Jitendra Singh reiterated the Modi government’s commitment for equitable growth and development of every part of the country.
He recalled that, soon after formation of government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made a very thought – provoking observation that a wholesome, harmonious growth of Mother India is possible only when all the regions and parts grow equally together. Accordingly, the Modi Govt has been giving special attention to hitherto lesser attended regions which also includes the Northeast, he added.
Referring to several incredible new initiatives undertaken by the Modi government, Dr Jitendra Singh said, it was heartening to observe that revolutionary decisions like “remonetization” had been warmly welcomed in lesser mentioned areas like Andaman Nicobar and Northeast Tea Gardens. He said, the Modi Government is dedicated to the poor of this country and to those living in the remotest regions.
Jitendra Singh appreciated the keen interest taken by Jagdish Mukhi in the social and cultural life of the islands, and hoped that the professor’s academic background and literate profile will make a difference in the lives of the people living there.
