Lifestyle can affect infertility: Expert
STATE TIMES NEWS
JAMMU: Experts believe that lifestyle changes of 21st century have adversely affected fertility, resulting in low sperm count, infections, chronic diseases and erectile dysfunction in the males and damaged fallopian tubes, PCOS, low egg production and fibroids in Indian women.
This was stated by Dr Manika Khanna, MBBS, MD, DAGE (Germany) Director, Gaudium IVF and Gynae Solutions, IVF Clinic Chain India while addressing a CME here at Hotel Ritz Manor on Friday.
She said that according to the Indian Council of Medical Research, about 10-15 per cent (or 13-19 million) of married couples in India are infertile. “This is a rather overwhelming figure, especially in light of the fact that diabetes (another high incidence ailment) is merely between three to five per cent. Many fertility specialists in India also suspect that infertility is largely psychosomatic among the educated and employed upper and middle classes”, she added.
Dr Manika further said, “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders among females. It is one of the leading causes of female sub fertility and the most frequent endocrine problem in women of reproductive age. Finding that the ovaries appear polycystic on ultrasound is common, but it is not an absolute requirement in all definitions of the disorder. The most common immediate symptoms are anovulation, excess androgenic hormones, and insulin resistance. Anovulation results in irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, and ovulation-related infertility. Hormone imbalance generally causes acne and hirsutism.”
“Keeping in mind, Gaudium IVF is going to open its high-end IVF facility at Jammu in conjunction with Dr. Sapna Khullar. Jammu people will get state of the art facility and high standard infertility treatment in Jammu from next month,” she added.
Dr Sapna Khullar said that the infertility is prevalent among professionals especially those working in Software and IT Sectors. “Working on computers for 12 to 14 hours, lack of attention or time for nutrition and a disturbed sleep cycle have all become perfect ingredients for infertility”, she added.
The CME was attended by eminent doctors of Jammu especially General Physicians and Gynecologists.
