RAJOURI: In an effort to maintain the pristine beauty of the Himalayan ecosystem, Rashtriya Rifles Batallion, Topa took up the cause of spreading awareness regarding efficient and effective solid waste disposal at Saaj village of Rajouri District. The effort was in the form of a structured lecture conducted for the village dwellers, to promote and incorporate minimum generation of waste, segregation of (bio-degradable and non bio-degradable) and disposal method.The promotional lecture highlighted the method of Reuse, Reduce and Recycling at the grass root level. The harmful effects of plastic waste entering the food cycle of domestic animals, acting as an impediment in recharging the ground water and clogging of seasonal streams was explicitly explained to the audience. Other simple techniques like conversion degradable waste into bio compost/vermin compost and use of organic manure appealed to masses.
The audience was enlightened on the importance of community efforts in the prevention of littering through reuse of gunny bags, metal objects, use of centralized dustbins and avoiding polythenes. On the culmination of this informative session the panchayat members applauded the initiative undertaken by the battalion and made a resolve to carry forward the message to all natives of village.
