Lecture on ‘present scenario of Urdu’ held at JU

JAMMU: The Department of Urdu, University of Jammu on Friday organised an extension lecture on topic ‘present scenario of Urdu’ in the world particularly in Turki.
Prof Khwaja Ekram Ud Din of JNU, New Delhi delivered a thought provoking lecture on the topic. The programme was presided over by Dean Faculty of Arts, Prof Kedar Nath while Prof Shohab Inayat Malik, HoD Urdu and Dr.Reyaz Ahmed Associate Professor of the Department also graced the presidium.
In his though provoking lecture, Prof Khwaja informed that according to census of 2011, Urdu is the fourth language which is spoken all over the world. In Mauritius Urdu is the mother tongue of the people of the country. In Canada two lakhs people speak Urdu, said Prof Khwaja.
Regarding Turki he informed that in Turki journalism was started by Urdu newspaper in 1880 namely ‘Pak-E-Islam’. It was published in two languages i.e in Turki and Urdu.
Prof Kedar Nath described Urdu a link language and cultural heritage of India.
He said that Urdu is a civilised language having a rich literature to its credit.
He also threw light on the present position of Urdu in central Asian countries and described Urdu a link language of the whole world.
Earlier in his welcome address, Prof Shohab informed that Prof Khwaja is a towering writer of Urdu and has visited several countries.
He informed that five Urdu students of Astambol University Turki are visiting Jammu University on 19th of September 2016. They will interact with the students, scholars, faculty members and Vice Chancellor.
