Lasting impact
Dear Editor,
It reminds me of Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya, who when offered the position of Dewan of Mysore State, invited his relatives for dinner. He told them that he would take up the offer on the condition that they should not ask him to use his position to help them get their personal work done. I joined an engineering college in 1960. The Head of the Physics Department, Dr Srikantia, was Dr Homi J. Bhabha’s class fellow. There were very few Ph.Ds at that time and we held him in awe. He was a strict disciplinarian. He had kept a register for latecomers. One day he was himself late. The first thing he did was to make an entry “Dr Srikantia late by five minutes.” Such individuals leave a lasting impact.
