KVK’s commercial floriculture drive blossoming in Reasi

REASI: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) is developing the entrepreneurship in floriculture at Kanjali and Bhakta villages of Reasi district and is guiding the farmers on scientific marigold cultivation so that extra income and employment can be generated for the farmers.

These villages are known as the marigold villages and the farmers of these villages are selling the marigold flowers at Katra, Udhampur and even in Jammu. KVK, Reasi is working in these villages under the guidelines of Associate Director Extension (ADE) and Incharge KVKs of SKUAST-J, Dr. R.K Arora Scientist and Head of KVK, Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal along with a team of scientists are endeavouring to uplift the socio-economic status of the farmers of these villages and motivating the farmers of adjoining villages to follow the blueprint of these villages so that adoption rate of the new technologies in marigold cultivation can be enhanced by which ultimately the farmers of the area can be benefitted.

During the recent visit of KVK scientists at Bhakta village, Gulsher Mohammed, a progressive floriculturist of the village reported that he is generating extra income by trading the marigold flowers in Jammu specifically for the marriage purposes. He informed to the KVK scientists that on Diwali there was a great demand of the marigold flowers and now-a-days (marriage season) he is making garlands of the marigold flowers.  KVK, Reasi is making strenuous efforts to develop entrepreneurship in marigold crop in these villages. The farmers have been advised to produce the marigold crop commercially and adopt the latest technologies in the marigold cultivation so that the marigold crop quantity and quality can be increased. KVK has laid the Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) on the hybrid marigold in the area and other farmers of the area are showing keen interest in the marigold hybrids. Shail Singh, a progressive floriculturist of Kanjali village was  awarded  and appreciated by the KVK, Reasi for his efforts towards commercial floriculture.
