Kargil Martyrs’ Club wins opening Handball tie

JAMMU: Kargil Martyrs’ Club won the inaugural match of the Open Handball Night Tournament, organised by the Arun Sharma Sports and Social Welfare Trust (ASSSW) in memory of two former international players, SP South Ajay Sharma and Rakesh Dogra at newly developed Handball court on University of Jammu (JU) campus, here on Saturday.
The event was jointly declared open by Director Sports, University of Jammu (JU), Dr Dawood Iqbal Baba and Superintendent of Police (SP) South, Ajay Sharma. Both the dignitaries interacted with the participating teams and their officials and witnessed the inaugural match under flood lights.
The Trust has collaborated with the Directorate of Sports, JU for the first of its kind tournament in Jammu to pay tributes to the top J&K Handball players, who have left this world at young.
Earlier, in the opening match, Kargil Martyrs’ Club defeated J&K Sports Council XI 22-19. In another scheduled match of the day between Arun Sharma Handball Academy (ASHA) beat Chandigarh XI 28-24.
In total, eight teams from within and outside J&K are taking part in this league cum knockout event.
“The Trust which has been formed in the name of former India Handball coach and son of the soil, Arun Kumar. So, it is our endeavour to remember those heros of the past, especially in the game of Handball,” said member trustee and organising secretary of the tournament, Ashutosh Sharma.
