Justice Tashi Rabstan appointed as acting Chief Justice J&K and Ladakh High Court

JAMMU: President of India Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Tashi Rabstan as Acting Chief Justice of common High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

It is worthwhile to mention that Justice Tashi Rabstan is the only High Court Judge from Ladakh UT.
Justice Magrey retires on December 7 and Justice Rabstan will take over as the acting chief justice from December 8.
According to a notification issued by Law Department of Union of India, vide notification dated December 6, 2022, in exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President, is pleased to appoint Justice Tashi Rabstan, senior-most Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with effect from 08.12.2022 consequent upon the retirement of Justice Ali Mohd Magrey, Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Justice Tashi Rabstan was born in an agriculturist family of Varsudopa on April 10, 1963 at village Skurbuchan, District Leh and did his Graduation and LL.B from University of Jammu. He was enrolled as an Advocate on March 6, 1990 in Bar Council of Jammu and Kashmir and started practicing in the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir & various other High Courts on Arbitrations, Constitution, Service, Election, Civil and Criminal matters. Experienced in researching intent of laws & judicial decisions & apply law to clients’ circumstances. He also remained as Standing Counsel for Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh from 1997 till 2005 and was appointed as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel, now Central Government Counsel, for Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Jammu Wing in

September, 1998 and continued till elevation. He was also remained as panel counsel for Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi from April, 2008 to December 31, 2011. He was appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir vide Notification No. K.13021/01/2012-US.II dated 7th March, 2013 and took oath of office on 8th March, 2013 and appointed as permanent Judge of High Court of Jammu and Kashmir on May 16, 2014.
Congratulating Justice Rabstan, the Chairman/CEC, Adv Tashi Gyalson said, “Indeed a proud moment for the entire Ladakh as a son of Ladakhi soil would now take over the highest judiciary position of two Union Territories. He was the first Ladakhi to become a judge of High Court and now he would assume the duties of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh. We are proud of him and we would definitely hope to see him in much higher positions in the future. My congratulations and best wishes to Justice Tashi Rabtsan for his future endeavors.”
