JU holds Induction Program for inaugural batch of Five-Year Integrated Mathematical Sciences Programme

JAMMU: The Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, University of Jammu (JU) , organized an Induction Program for the first batch of students enrolled in the newly launched Five-Year Integrated UG-PG Programme in Mathematical Sciences.

The event marked the beginning of an ambitious academic journey blending Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science under the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. In his inaugural address, he congratulated the students and praised the faculty for initiating a forward-looking, interdisciplinary programme. Emphasizing experiential learning, Prof. Rai highlighted the importance of curiosity, problem-solving, and innovation over rote learning. Quoting Acharya Vinoba Bhave, he underlined that true education begins when curiosity replaces conditioning.
He encouraged the faculty to design a dynamic, activity-based curriculum that evolves with student feedback and stays aligned with real-world challenges. He added that the programme’s interdisciplinary nature will equip students with essential skills in computational thinking, analytics, and communication-vital for holistic development and employability.
Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs, applauded the programme’s academic rigour and urged students to build strong analytical and computational foundations. Prof. Sangeeta Gupta, Dean Planning and Development, called the initiative a model for higher education, moving beyond the traditional view of Mathematics.
Prof. Vibhakar Mansotra, Head, Department of Computer Sciences & IT, spoke on the growing significance of computational methods and data analytics in solving global challenges, while Prof. Romesh Sharma, Head, Department of Mathematics and Dean, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, introduced the programme structure and objectives, focusing on a seamless blend of theory and application.
Students were familiarized with the syllabus, examination schemes, and University facilities including the library, sports complex, and health centre. The programme aims to prepare students for emerging careers in AI, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, and Scientific Computing by offering a robust foundation in core mathematical disciplines.
The induction concluded with an interactive session where students shared their aspirations. Faculty members encouraged them to maintain a spirit of inquiry and lifelong learning.
The event was attended by Prof Kamal Misra from Kolkata University, Prof. Rahul Gupta, Prof. Lalitsen Sharma, Prof. Pawanesh Kumar Abrol, Prof. Pawan Kumar, Prof. Parmil Kumar, Dr. Shubhnandan Jamwal, Dr. Shallu Sharma, Dr. Tirth Ram, Dr. Sarika Verma, Jasbir Singh, Dr. Vijay K Shivgotra, Dr. Sunil Kumar, Dr. Manish Kumar and Dr. Tarun Kumar Chauhan.
