JKBOSE to introduce Legal Studies at Higher Secondary level

JAMMU: Chairman, J&K State Board of School Education, Prof Zahoor Ahmed Chatt on Friday inaugurated the workshop on ‘Inclusion of legal studies in the School Curriculum’ here.
In his inaugural address, the Prof Zahoor Ahmed Chatt, Chairman said that J&K State Board of School Education has taken this initiative to respond to the need of the hour to make students comparable to other states in the rest of the country.
He said that at senior secondary level at least working knowledge with regard to various aspects of law shall be a part of curriculum for the students of all streams in general and in particular to facilitate to those who are desirous to opt the field of legal subject in their further studies after passing Class 12th.
Director Academics, Kaneez Fatima in the technical session explained the agenda of programme and strategies to be devised for prescribing syllabi of legal studies as one of the elective subject in the ensuing academic session while reviewing the combination of Subjects prescribed by JKBOSE.
Dr Arvind Jasrotia, Head and Dean of Law Department, University of Jammu and Dr Sanjay Gupta, Director, Law School, University of Jammu also participated in the workshop.
Besides, subject experts and faculty of Law Department from various universities and colleges, some principals and teachers also participated in the
programme.
Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Dr. Sanjay Gupta and all faculty experts shared their views for introducing the law studies in all streams because of the tangible requirement of this subject.
After deliberations, it was unanimously resolved that the subject Legal Studies should be introduced at Higher Secondary Stage i.e, 11th and 12th as Legal Study-1 and Legal Study-II as an elective subject in all streams. It was also decided that broader areas of the Legal Studies like Human Rights, Environmental Law, Gender Studies, Child Rights, Lok Adalat, Consumer Laws and Judicial system in India should be incorporated in this subject. It was felt that there is an urgent need to have the specialized faculty having LLM as basic qualification to teach the subject.
