JAMMU: After the likes of star performers, Ranjit Singh and Vivek Sharma, who serves with J&K Police, another young player from Jammu is achieving new heights in the most decorated game of handball in Jammu and Kashmir.
Nitin Sharma, who is just 21 years old, has to his credit two international gold medals won in Third South Asian Championship and IHP Trophy.
Unfortunately, due to the sorry State of affairs in the home state, his achievements are hardly known outside the handball circles. In view of lack of projection by the J and K Handball Association and ignorance on part of the J and K State Sports Council (JKSSC), the true sporting talent of Jammu and Kashmir in the game of handball remained neglected all these years.
Part of the champion team in the 12th South Asian Games held at Guwahati in Assam, this young man from Jammu has already won gold in the Third South Asian Handball Championship held in Uttar Pradesh in 2014. In 2012, Nitin won gold in the IHP Trophy held at Kathmandu in Nepal.
In fact, as a young talented boy, Nitin was taken by the Indian Army (157 TA Bn at Bari Brahmana in Jammu) in August 2013 with the result he became an active member of the Services Team at the national level.
He was enrolled in the army as a Sepoy but has been promoted to the next rank of Havildar the very next year considering his achievements.
At this young age of 21 years, polite and gentle handball player from Jammu has already achieved a lot for the country. He was part of the Indian team in the 17th Asian Games held at Incheon South Korea in 2014.
“I started my game in the year 2005 as a young boy at DPL Ground Jammu under the guidance of Police Coach and international player, Vivek Khajuria. Since education plays an important role in career building, I’m pursuing my graduation. If all goes well, I will be a graduate next year,” Nitin told a sports weekly.
