J & K NCC GIRLS SCALED MT STATE TIMES NEWS
JAMMU: Three National Cadet Corps (NCC) girls cadets of NCC Directorate J and K have done the State proud by scaling the Mt Everest.
They were part of the first ever all girls Mt Everest Expedition of the NCC which scaled the summit on 21st and 22nd May, 2016.
Hailing from Leh and students of Class XII of Government Higher Secondary School Leh, the three girl cadets namely Stanzlin Laskit, Tashi Laskit and Tsering Angmo had been training hard for the last two years and were selected after a very rigorous training and selection process.
On March 9, Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh had flagged off the first-ever all girls’ National Cadet Corps (NCC) Mount Everest expedition from New Delhi.
The team was led by Col Gaurav Karki along with 15 service personnel.
“The girls had the world at their feet and considering dangers involved in scaling the peak, it is no less than a commendable feat by them,” said Defence Spokesperson Col S.D Goswami.
Director General, NCC, Lt Gen A Chakravarty, had proposed the conduct of the first-ever NCC girls’ expedition to the Mount Everest in 2014. All India trials at 25 selected hubs were carried out and 100 girl cadets were nominated to undergo the customised mountaineering course at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, from 7th January to 3rd February last year.
Based on their performance, 40 girl cadets were selected for the first pre-Everest expedition.
Pre-Everest Expedition to Mount Deo-Tibba at 19,688 feet near Manali in Himachal Pradesh was conducted for 40 cadets in April and May 2015. A total of 15 cadets were selected for the next phase based on their performance.
The aim of mountaineering expeditions in NCC is to strengthen the character and instill qualities of courage, comradeship, discipline and leadership in the cadets. NCC has always been in the forefront of adventure activities.
Maj Gen S.S Jakhar, Additional Director General said that these girls by their outstanding achievement have brought the women power of the state to the forefront. He further said that these achievers will be suitably felicitated and rewarded on their return.
Meanwhile, Governor N.N Vohra conveyed greetings and congratulations to the four Ladakhi girls, Stanzin Laskit, Rigzin Dolker, Tsering Angmo and Tashi Laskit for scaling the Mount Everest on 22nd May, 2016. These talented girls were part of the first ever all girls’ National Cadet Corps Mount Everest Expedition.
In a congratulatory message the Governor has conveyed his greetings and congratulations to all the four girls, and to the other members of the Expedition, for their outstanding success in climbing the world’s highest peak.
