J&K junior athletes win 8 medals in NZ meet

JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir junior athletics team secured eight medals, including gold, in the North Zone Athletics (under-20) Championship concluded on Friday at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.
The medals tally included gold, silver and six bronze in field and track events. Earlier, athletes from South, West, East and Central zones took part in the two-day competition.
Promising athlete, Amarjeet Singh, who contested in the under-18 category, clinched three medals. He won gold in 400 meters and bronze in Long Jump and 4×100 meters Relay. Sunil Choudhary bagged silver in 400 meters event in under-20 category. Similarly, Shakir Rashid secured two bronze medals in 100 meters event of under-18 category 4×100 meters event of under-20 age group. Varun Kumar also won two bronze medals in 100 meters Hurdles in under-18 group and 4×100 meters in under-20. Shubam Sharma bagged bronze in 400 meters event of under-18 category while Abid Hussain won third place in 200 meters event in under-20 event. Another bronze won by Abid Hussain in 4×100 meters event of under-20 category.
Meanwhile, the J and K Athletics Association appreciated the athletes for their performance and asked the J&K State Sports Council to provide the necessary infrastructure to the trainees so that they could further improve their performance at the National level.
