Jammu, Srinagar top in fatal road mishaps

JAMMU: Both Jammu and Srinagar districts continue to figure on top of the list of districts recording highest number of fatal injuries in road accidents.
Despite taking several measures including spreading road safety awareness and improving quality of road networks the twin capital cities continue to record highest number of road accidents.
According to official sources 2,677 persons were killed in over 16,000 road accidents between 2014 and October 2016. Over 22,000 civilians were injured during this period.
Till October last year, 768 persons were killed in 4,572 road accidents and 917 persons in 5,836 accidents in 2015.
In Kashmir region, Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam accounted for highest number of road accidents and in Jammu region-Jammu, Rajouri, Udhampur and Ramban districts recorded highest number of road accidents.
The Jammu Srinagar National Highway which witnessed several fatal accidents continues to wait for fully equipped trauma centres in order to save precious lives.
In addition lack of availability of life saving tools available with quick reaction teams and local agencies  at district level often lead to loss of lives as precious time is often wasted in retrieving critically injured with head injuries from deep gorges.
According to official sources, 42 people were killed in Srinagar, 19 in Budgam and 18 in Anantnag till October end in 2016. In 2015, 63 people were killed in Srinagar, 27 each in Baramulla and Anantnag and 26 in Budgam while in 2014, 58 people lost their lives in road accidents in Srinagar, 35 in Anantnag and 25 in Budgam.
In Jammu region 132 deaths were reported till October 2016, 69 in Ramban and 59 in Kathua. In 2015, 129 deaths were reported in Jammu, 108 in Udhampur and 85 in Samba and in 2014 Jammu recorded highest number of 165 deaths followed by Rajouri with 100 and Ramban with 92.
Jammu recorded highest number of accidents during the same period. 1064 accidents were reported till October 2016 in Jammu district, 1408 in 2015 and 1430 in 2014. Similarly Srinagar district recorded 272 accidents till October 2016, 435 in 2015 and 374 in 2014.
