Jammu Cyber police nabs Andhra-based criminal for blackmailing, transmitting private pictures of woman

JAMMU: Cyber Police Jammu succeeded in apprehending a cyber criminal involved in online blackmailing, harassment and sharing of personal & private content of a woman complainant over social media platform.
Based on a complaint filed by a woman complainant at Cyber Police Station, Jammu regarding online blackmailing, harassment and sharing of her personal and private contents by one of her ex-students cum online friend namely Jarajappu Anantha Jayadev of Andhra Pradesh, FIR No. 13/2021 under section 67/67-A of Information Technology Act 2000 was registered at Cyber Police Station Jammu and investigation started. During investigation and as per the statement of complainant, it was revealed that complainant was a scholar from a renowned University, engaged in delivering online lectures to many students besides giving guest lecturers in different colleges. In 2019, she applied online on NAUKRI.com for a suitable job as per qualification and experience. Subsequently, owner of a YouTube channel engaged in UPSC & SSC exams online coaching offered her a job for recording and uploading online videos on different topics of her subject for subscribers/viewers of that Channel for their preparations in UPSC/SSC and other competitive examinations, in lieu of some incentives/honorarium. Moreover, she was also asked to share those videos on her Facebook account for wide publicity. She accepted the offer and started doing the job.
Subsequently, one Jarajappu Anantha Jayadev, son of Tirumaleshwar Rao Jarajapu, resident of Allipuram, Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh contacted complainant on Facebook and requested her for some comprehensive classes of subject on payment basis. Soon after that, he started interacting with complainant quite often and gained her faith. The complainant, in a state of distress, got lured to his talks and accepted his offer. He also gained access of her Instagram ID and they developed online private relationship for some time. But, very soon, he started showing his real face and started threatening and blackmailing her with threats that he had recorded all her private videos/chats and also taken screenshots of private videos and will make the same viral on social media. He was so adamant that he transmitted/published the adult screenshots/chats through the Instagram ID of complainant, password of which he had taken earlier from her very cleverly. He even transmitted personal and objectionable chat/photos to relatives of the complainant. During technical analysis of Instagram profile of accused and IPs used, it was established that profile of complainant was opened from a location in Andhra Pradesh/Vishakhapatnam, from where above-named accused was belonging to.
Accordingly, agile team of Cyber Police Station Jammu led by Inspector Rakesh Kumar, Investigating Officer and accompanied by Inspector Gagandeep Singh along and some other Police personnel of Cyber Police Station under the supervision of Dy SP Priyanka Kumari was deputed to Telangana/Andhra Pradesh, which ultimately arrested accused Jarajappu Anantha Jayadev from Ravindra Mens PG, Ayyapa Society, Madhapur, District Rangareddy, Telangana, Hyderabad. Police team also seized a mobile-handset containing obscene contents from accused.
SP Cyber Naresh Singh has cautioned the general public to keep their social media accounts private after applying best possible privacy options and not to take friend requests of unknown persons, to stay safe from menace of sextortion related crimes. SP further suggested confirming credentials of any social media friend before accepting a video call request.
