Inter-department sports meet of Central University begins Poonam, Nitish share carrom titles

JAMMU: Poonam Sambyal of Computer Sciences and IT emerged winner in women’s carrom event on the opening day of the inter-department sports meet of Central University of Jammu (CUJ), organised by Dean Students Welfare (DSW) at main campus Raya in district Samba.
In the final, Poonam defeated Pooja Dhar of TTM. Similarly, in men’s section, Nitish Manotra of HRM and OB trounced Mohd Shafeeq (TTM) to win the event.
Meanwhile, in chess competition, Swadha (HRM and OB) emerged winner in women’s section beating Bharti Karsyal of Mathematics. The men’s chess final was won by Prayas Sharma of Department of Mathematics after he trounced Mayukh of NSS.
In all, 24 teams each in men and women sections turned up for carrom event. In chess, 18 teams in men and 20 in women took part.
Earlier, the sports meet was declared open by Vice Chancellor of Central University, Prof Ashok Aima while Deputy Director Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), Haji Mirza Hussain was Guest of Honour.
Speaking to the gathering, Vice Chancellor said that sports give sense of competition and provide much needed exposure. He wished the participants all success.
