Inspiring Leadership: Soma Mondal, Member, Board of Governors, IIM Jammu, A Trailblazer in India’s Corporate Landscape

Soma Mondal, a Board of Governors Member at the Indian Institute of Management Jammu (IIM) Jammu, has attained a noteworthy achievement by being recognized as one of the four most influential women in India, as per Forbes. This acknowledgment is not only a personal triumph for Soma Mondal but also a source of inspiration for aspiring women leaders across the country. This acknowledgment highlights her outstanding leadership in the corporate realm and her pioneering position as the top of the league Women Business Leaders across the globe.
Soma Mondal had been at the helm of SAIL since Jan 2021 to April 2023, making history as its first woman Chairperson. Soma Mondal has the distinction of not only being the first woman Functional Director of SAIL, but she is also the first woman Chairman of the company. Currently, she is serving as Member, Public Enterprises Selection Board, (PESB).

Born in the city of temples, Bhubaneswar, she laid the foundation for her illustrious career by graduating in Electrical Engineering in 1984 from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela. With over 35 years of experience in the metal industry, Soma Mondal began her journey at NALCO, where she steadily climbed the ranks, eventually becoming the Director (Commercial). In 2017, she took on the challenge of leading SAIL, one of India’s largest steel producers. Her visionary leadership has not only propelled SAIL to new heights but has also shattered gender barriers in a traditionally male-dominated sector.
Beyond her remarkable corporate achievements, Soma Mondal holds the esteemed position of Chairperson of SCOPE (Standing Conference of Public Enterprises), a testament to her influence and impact on the public sector in India. Her commitment and leadership were further acknowledged when she was honoured as ‘CEO of the Year’ at the ET Prime Women Leadership Awards in 2023, recognizing her exceptional contributions to the corporate world.9
