Hiroshima: Obama makes history without apology
Dear Editor,
US President Barack Obama, who will be relinquishing office soon, wants to be remembered as the most politically correct head of state in American history. The rapprochement with Cuba and Iran and the recent visit to Vietnam are all part of this legacy he wishes to leave behind. This time, Obama has made his peace with Hiroshima in a manner that no US President has had the nerve to try.
Of course, even as he met the survivors of America’s atomic bombing in 1945, he refused to heed calls to apologise for the strike. Instead, he told an audience that included Hiroshima survivors, that technology as devastating as nuclear arms demands a “moral revolution”.
Obama’s caveat that “we can chart a course that leads to the destruction of these stockpiles” is bound to be greeted with a measure of scepticism. The US President cannot duck the core issue, specifically that his country boasts the largest nuclear stockpile in the world.
