HC decided 13,000 cases in ’16; CJ’s disposal reaches 1 lakh

JAMMU: The J&K High Court decided 13,000 which included 47 Full Bench matters, 1,756 Division Bench main cases and 11,129 Single Bench.
It is worthwhile to mention here that Chief Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar disposal reached more than one lac including 50,000 cases including various landmark judgments from his elevation as High Court Judge at Madras High Court and Chief Justice J&K High Court.
The year 2016 has seen a new chapter so far as reduction of pendency in the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir is concerned. The figures bear a testimony to the fact that innovation of various measures regarding reduction in the backlog, has shown very positive results at the ground level. Justice N. Paul Vasanthakumar, Chief Justice and Judges of the High Court have opened new vista in every Chapter of the judiciary in the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
It is not only the reduction of pendency in the High Court which has seen a marvellous progress but the Subordinate Courts have also shown positive results so far as reduction of backlog is concerned. Chief Justice has been instrumental in guiding  the Presiding Officers of the Subordinate Courts on various fronts quo the management of Court work, reduction of pendency and commitment to the institution, which has resulted in a great achievement so far as the disposal of old cases, cases relating to senior citizens and weaker sections of the society.
During the year 2016, in the High Court itself about 13,000 cases, which included 47 Full Bench matters, 1756 Division Bench main cases and 11129 Single Bench main cases were decided. What is remarkable is that 67% of Full Bench cases pending at the beginning of the year have been disposed of during the current year. Over and above the figures detailed out above are excluding the disposal of huge number of miscellaneous matters.
The strenuous and commendable efforts on the part of the Chief Justice and companion Judges have shown tremendous reduction in pendency of old cases, cases related to senior citizens, contempt matters and public interest litigation cases. Besides reduction of pendency, during the year 2016 itself for the first time in the history of the High Court more than 500 appointments were made at ministerial level in the Judiciary of the State against the vacant posts.
