Govt agencies launch cleanliness & beautification drive to transform Leh into world-class tourist city

LEH: In pursuance of the directions of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, a comprehensive cleanliness and urban improvement drive has been launched in Leh city with renewed vigour and commitment. The initiative aims to transform Leh into one of the cleanest, most organised, and tourist-friendly cities in the country.
Acting in mission mode, the concerned government agencies have commenced large-scale operations to remove accumulated dust, construction and demolition waste lying along roadsides across key areas of the city. The initial phase of the drive is focused on prominent locations, including Lok Niwas, the Secretariat, Leh Main Market, Jivetsal, and adjoining areas. Simultaneously, preparatory work for extensive plantation is underway, with pits being dug along these stretches to enhance the green cover and aesthetic appeal of the city. This integrated approach is designed not only to improve sanitation but also to contribute to environmental sustainability and urban beautification.
The initiative follows Saxena’s visit to Leh Market and Old Leh Town on March 15, during which he issued clear directives for undertaking a massive and sustained effort to address issues related to sanitation, infrastructure development, and overall urban management.
Saxena, who is personally monitoring the progress of the works, has expressed satisfaction over the efforts being made by the government agencies. He noted that such coordinated and determined actions would significantly contribute to creating a clean, well-organised, and visitor-friendly urban environment in Leh. Reiterating his vision for Ladakh, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised that the collective and sustained efforts of government agencies, complemented by active public participation, are essential to position Ladakh as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world.
The UT Administration has urged citizens, local stakeholders, and visitors to actively support and participate in this initiative, ensuring its long-term success and sustainability.
