The NDA Government shouldn’t bother too much about the remarks made by Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. Most of his claims and allegations are not backed by facts. The pension and insurance schemes have been launched to address the three critical needs of the poor: Accident insurance, life insurance and pension. Generally, the under-privileged sections of society do not have access to these basic securities, unlike what is there is Western countries.
The good thing is that the premium to be paid is nominal and affordable to the financially weaker people. Yes, it is still unclear how the government will fund the projects, as it is hugely subsidised. Hopefully that will be clearer in days to come. The Government needs to learn from the last regime’s failed effort to push insurance and pension to the poor, so that this time around the schemes are a success.
