JAMMU: On the concluding day of the 11-day-long Jammu leg of the ongoing Theatre Olympics being organised by National School of Drama, Girish Karnad’s directed Play – ‘Bikhre Bimb’ was staged here on Sunday at Abhinav Theatre. The play was presented by ‘Ranga Shankara’, Bangalore.
Featuring Arundhati Nag, since its premiere in 2005, ‘Bikhre Bimb’ has travelled to all the major festivals and theatres across India with over 100 shows.
At the 2008 Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards, Karnad won the Best Playwright and Best Director awards, while ArundhatiNag scooped up the Best Actress award for the play.
Along with technological brilliance, the production has won acclaim for its powerful story, with Karnad delving into the mind of a woman and the complexities of being an Indian writer in English.
The Playwright and Director of the play Girish Karnad is one of India’s best known theatre personalities. A Padmashri and Padma Bhushan awardee, he is also the recipient of the Jnanpith Award. For over four decades he has written, directed, acted in, and critiqued plays and films.
Actress Arundhati Nag is also the invitee actress in Eighth Theatre Olympics and is one of the few truly multi-lingual actresses in India today, performing on stage and on camera in over six languages. She has been awarded the Padmashri as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi award for Theatre. In 2009 she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the National Film Awards for her role in Paa, apart from several other awards.
Co-director K.M Chaitanya is a well-known film director and theatre person whose first feature film AaDinagalu won several awards and acclaim.
