As we mark the 44th death anniversary of Marhoom Ghulam Nabi Wani Sogami, we pause not only to remember a remarkable human being, but to reflect on the enduring legacy of a man who symbolized public service, grassroots development, and unwavering dedication to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. A towering personality in the socio-political history of North Kashmir, his contributions remain etched in the heart of every corner he touched – especially in the remote villages of Lolab, Kupwara, and beyond.
A Humble Beginning with Revolutionary Resolve
Born in the early decades of the 20th century in the scenic village of Sogam Lolab, Ghulam Nabi Sogami emerged at a time when Kashmir was undergoing political reawakening and yearning for change. At a young age, he recognized that the path to progress did not lie in power or privilege but in service to the people, especially the most neglected.
Unlike many of his peers who entered politics for status, Sogami Sahib’s inspiration came from the hardships of the common man. A witness to poverty, lack of infrastructure, and social injustice, he became a reformist – an organic leader whose politics was rooted not in rhetoric, but in real life and real struggles.
Groundbreaking Work in Labour Welfare and Irrigation
One of the most defining features of Sogami Sahib’s public career was his pioneering efforts in labour welfare and rural development. He was instrumental in introducing and promoting labour laws in Jammu and Kashmir, many of which were enacted during his tenure. These laws became the backbone of worker protections, setting in motion a rights-based approach to employment across sectors.
Yet perhaps his most lasting impact was felt through his work in water harvesting and irrigation. In the hilly terrains and remote pockets of Kupwara and Lolab – regions often left out of development maps – he initiated water channels, rainwater storage tanks, and eco-friendly irrigation systems that transformed barren lands into cultivable fields. These small but visionary projects brought prosperity to hundreds of farming families and helped build agricultural resilience in an unpredictable climate.
For the women of these areas, these initiatives were nothing short of revolutionary. Hours spent carrying water from distant sources were replaced with time devoted to family care, education, and income-generating activities. These efforts, driven by empathy and a deep understanding of ground realities, speak volumes about his holistic vision for empowerment.
A People’s Politician
Sogami Sahib’s greatness did not lie in occupying high offices, but in remaining accessible, honest, and consistent. He was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly, where he played a vital role in shaping pro-people policies. He was a staunch advocate for land reforms, believing firmly that true freedom meant economic freedom – particularly for the landless peasants of Kashmir.
He firmly believed that education was the key to upliftment, and encouraged schooling in far-flung areas by facilitating teacher appointments, building school infrastructure, and motivating families to send their children – especially daughters – to school.
In an era marked by political turbulence, Sogami Sahib stood for moderation, unity, and justice. He worked across religious and regional divides, and opposed any ideology that threatened communal harmony or social peace. He believed that the strength of Kashmir lay in its diversity – in the co-existence of different faiths, communities, and traditions.
A Legacy That Continues to Inspire
Though Ghulam Nabi Wani Sogami left this world in 1981, his contributions continue to shape lives even today. The irrigation channels he built still water fields, the labour laws he promoted still protect workers, and the values he embodied still inspire a generation of grassroots leaders and social workers.
As modern Kashmir grapples with developmental challenges and political complexity, the people yearn for leadership like Sogami Sahib’s – grounded, sincere, and selfless. His life reminds us that politics is not merely about power, but about the art of caring for people.
His honesty, simplicity, and accessibility are qualities that are rare in today’s political landscape. Sogami Sahib’s life is a testament to the fact that one man, armed with conviction and compassion, can change the destiny of thousands.
A Nation Pays Tribute
On this solemn occasion, several social organizations and political bodies gathered to pay homage to this extraordinary son of the soil. A special function was held in Kashmir under the banner of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, where party leaders recalled his contributions with great respect.
Veteran political figures and cabinet Minister remembered him as not only a leader of the people but as a moral force in politics. Among those who offered heartfelt tributes was his son, Nasir Aslam Wani Sogami, a prominent political figure and advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The words spoken, the tears shed, and the memories shared reflected the depth of love and respect that Ghulam Nabi Sogami continues to command – even four decades after his passing.
May Allah (SWT) elevate his ranks in Jannat-ul-Firdous, and grant him eternal peace. May his legacy guide future generations to tread the path of integrity, inclusiveness, and people-first development.
Walking in His Footsteps
Let us not reduce his legacy to ceremonial tributes. Let us honour him through action – by working for the poor, protecting natural resources, standing up for justice, and reviving the culture of honesty in public life.
In the words of a villager from Lolab whose fields were transformed by Sogami Sahib’s irrigation project:
“Woh sirf neta nahi the, hamaray liye ek rehnuma thay.”
(“He was not just a leader, he was a guide for us.”)
Let us carry that guidance forward – not just in memory, but in mission.
