GDC Samba holds Tree Talk

SAMBA: As an extension activity of Van Mahotsava that is celebrated across India to create enthusiasm among masses for forest conservation and planting trees, a tree talk was organised at Govt. Degree College, Samba on Friday. O.P Sharma Vidyarthi, Director Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing, J and K Government was the Chief Resource Person. Abhijeet Joshi, DFO Social Forestry, Samba also accompanied the tree talk. Vidyarthi has been holding tree talks regularly since 2010.
During his two hour long talk, Vidyarthi explained the household and medicinal utilities of many plants growing natively around Samba. Joshi joined him in adding vernacular knowledge for the benefit of the students.
Dr. Ranvijay Singh, HoD Zoology, GDC Samba, who was instrumental in organising the tree talk at GDC Samba, introduced Vidyarthi to the gathering that encompassed students and teachers of the college.
Principal of the College, Dr. G.S Rakwal expressed his happiness and satisfaction over the knowledge shared by O.P Vidyarthi. He was all praise for Vidyarthi for sparing time out of his awfully busy schedule and travelling to Samba. He hoped that such like educative activities be replicated in college campus so as to sensitise the students of the diversity in their surroundings.
Dr. Yashpaul Singh, HoD Botany, GDC Samba expressed his desire of setting up a Botanical Garden in the college campus. Joshi assured the college authorities that his office shall be at the forefront in facilitating the plantation drive in GDC Samba as well as in establishing a Botanical Garden in the college campus.
Towards the culmination of the tree talk, a Chinar tree was planted in the college campus by the principal of the college with a resolve that a large number of trees shall be planted in the college campus during this monsoon season. The tree talk was attended by many nature enthusiast students and teachers of the college.
